ISE introduction

This department was founded in 1964 and was the second school in the country to establish an industrial engineering department. It currently offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, a master’s in-service program, and an international research program. In 2004, this department became the first industrial engineering department in the country to pass the engineering education technology certification of the Chinese Institute of Engineering Education (IEET), which connected it to the international community. In 2008, it changed its name from “Industrial Engineering Department” to “Industrial and Systems Engineering Department”. In 2015, the undergraduate program was divided into “Engineering Group” and “Management Group”.

1. Program grouping: In the 104 academic year, the undergraduate program of this department was officially divided into two groups, Engineering Group and Management Group. 1. Engineering Group – Developing engineering capabilities: Familiarize oneself with the knowledge of natural and technical sciences to achieve quantitative management goals. 2. Management Group – Developing management capabilities: Familiarize oneself with management technology tools, understand process analysis management, and enhance management performance.

In the future, through the design of the course grouping, students can freely choose to develop engineering or management capabilities based on their expertise and interests. Through specially designed courses, students can understand the demand for industrial engineering and management skills in different industries, businesses, and jobs, allowing them to meet the needs of modern enterprises for industrial engineering and management talents.

Industrial engineering and management is an integrated discipline between engineering technology and management science, which integrates manufacturing technology and production planning, and management. The teaching spirit emphasizes the important concepts of “production and management as a whole” and “engineering and science combined”. It not only emphasizes the training of professional skills but also emphasizes the infusion of management concepts and cultivates industrial engineering talents with engineering practical and management skills, system planning and technology integration capabilities.

Industrial engineering and management is also a cross-cutting field of engineering technology and management, playing an important role in economic development. Industrial engineering and management engineers mainly apply professional knowledge and skills such as information technology and management science, as well as the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to design, establish, improve, re-engineer, and integrate systems to improve the efficiency of the system. In other words, the task of industrial engineering and management engineers is to conduct integrated analysis, design, and control of the system, and effectively allocate manpower, financial resources, and equipment to maximize the operational functions of the system to achieve high-quality, low-cost products and serve customers.

2. The curriculum appropriately reflects the content of the educational objectives

This department adheres to the whole-person education philosophy of Chung Yuan Christian University and takes “There is always a better way!” as its educational goal for cultivating students. This belief fully shows that this department continues to find social needs through innovative thinking in the changing times, and designs and utilizes teaching courses in response to the overall economic development trend in Taiwan. The main purpose of industrial and systems engineering is to help companies establish a management mechanism to continuously improve products.

Therefore, when considering the current curriculum planning, this department returns to the essence of industrial and systems engineering, using engineering science capabilities to assist companies in establishing management mechanisms to continuously improve products, allowing students to have a holistic concept of engineering and management.

The career path map planned by this department is as follows: 1. Engineering Group: Cultivate engineering knowledge and quantitative management skills, emphasize basic scientific literacy, then expand to system analysis and process management, establish organizations, and then offer courses tailored to high-tech industries, traditional industries, automobile industries, and emerging industries, etc., and through intensive and systematic case courses, make students have a comprehensive concept. 2. Management Group: Initially focus on cost analysis, understand organizational management, emphasize system training, then expand to system analysis and process management, establish organizations, and then offer courses tailored to special industries: medical care, hotels, logistics, theme parks, e-commerce, etc., and through intensive and systematic case courses, make students have a comprehensive concept.
