Engineering Division - Engineering Competency Development
Familiar with the fields of natural and technical sciences for quantitative management purposes.
Founded in 1964, the Department of Industrial Engineering was the second school in Taiwan to establish an Industrial Engineering Department, with bachelor’s degree programs, master’s degree programs, doctoral degree programs, master’s degree in-service programs, and international graduate programs. In 2004, the department became the first industrial engineering department in China to be accredited by the Institute of Engineering Education and Technology (IEET), bringing the department in line with international standards. In 2008, the department was renamed from “Department of Industrial Engineering” to “Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering”. In 2015, the Engineering Division and Management Division were established in the University.
Familiar with the fields of natural and technical sciences for quantitative management purposes.
Familiar with management technology tools, understand process analysis and management, and improve operation and management performance.
For the 104th academic year, the department’s undergraduate division is officially divided into two groups: the Engineering Division and the Management Division.
In the future, through the design of the curriculum, students will be able to freely choose to develop their engineering or management abilities based on their expertise and interests. Through the special design of the curriculum, students will be able to understand the competency needs of industrial engineering and management in different industries, enterprises, and workplaces, so that they can meet the needs of modern enterprises for talents in industrial engineering and management.
Industrial engineering and management is an integrated discipline between engineering technology and management science, integrating manufacturing technology and production planning, as well as business management. The spirit of teaching emphasizes the important concepts of “integration of production and management” and “integration of engineering and science”, not only emphasizing the training of professional skills but also emphasizing the inculcation of management concepts, to cultivate industrial engineering talents with engineering practice and management skills, as well as the ability of systematic planning and technological integration.
Industrial engineering and management is also a discipline that spans the fields of engineering and management and plays an important role in economic development. The so-called industrial engineering and management is mainly the application of information technology and management science and other professional knowledge and skills, as well as engineering analysis and design principles and methods, engaged in the design of the system, the establishment of the improvement, reengineering and integration, to enhance the effectiveness of the system, that is, industrial engineering and management of the task of the system to do the integrative analysis, design and control, and the effective allocation of manpower, financial resources, material resources, and equipment, to give full play to the operational functions of the system. The task of industrial engineers and managers is to analyze, design, and control the system in an integrated manner, and to effectively allocate human, financial, and material resources to the equipment, in order to give full play to the function of the system, to achieve the best economic efficiency, and to achieve high-quality and low-cost products to serve customers.
The department adheres to Chung Yuan Christian University’s philosophy of whole-person education, with “There is always a better way!” as the educational goal of cultivating students in the department. This belief fully demonstrates that the department, in the midst of changing times, still continues to use innovative thinking to identify the needs of the community, and with the changes in Taiwan’s environment in line with the pulse of the overall economic development, to design a practical teaching program that will help to meet the needs of society. The curriculum of Industrial and Systems Engineering is designed to meet the changing needs of society and the overall economic development of Taiwan.
The main purpose of industrial and systems engineering is to help enterprises to establish a management mechanism to continuously make products “from something to something”. Therefore, the department is thinking about the existing curriculum planning, that is, to return to the nature of industrial and systems engineering, using the ability of engineering science, to help enterprises to establish a management mechanism, and continue to make products from the existing to the refined, so that students can have the overall concept of engineering and management.
