This department is one of the earliest industrial engineering departments established in Taiwan, with more than 10,000 graduates in industry, government, and academia. The department possesses the following distinguishing features:
In addition to the fundamental training in relevant scientific theories and quantitative methods required for industrial engineers, our department places great emphasis on practical training.
We offer practical internship courses in essential subjects such as production management, quality management, work study, and facility planning. Starting from the second year, students are required to visit factories every semester. In the third year, students are expected to complete internships in companies or factories during the mid-term or summer break and propose improvement projects.
Over the past few years, faculty members in our department have been receiving research project grants from the National Science Council amounting to millions of dollars annually.
Graduate students in the master’s and doctoral programs have the opportunity to engage in practical and challenging advanced research through these research projects. Additionally, our department maintains a continuous collaboration with the industry and actively participates in mentoring programs, which have received unanimous praise from the industry.
Currently, our university has signed agreements with over twenty internationally renowned universities for various student exchange programs. Furthermore, the College of Engineering has established dual-degree programs with Cleveland State University, Michigan Technological University, and Florida State University in the United States. Under these programs, students from our department can complete three years of coursework at our university, followed by one year of graduate studies in the United States. Upon returning to our university and completing the final year of coursework, students will be awarded a bachelor’s degree from our university and a master’s degree from the U.S. institution.
To date, our department has produced over ten thousand alumni who have made outstanding achievements and contributions in various fields across society. In light of this, we organize industrial practice seminars every week, where we invite exceptional alumni to deliver special lectures. These lectures allow students to gain early insights into industry trends and learn from the successful methods employed by distinguished alumni. Furthermore, our alumni are actively involved in giving back to the department by generously donating funds to establish several high-value scholarships. These scholarships serve to encourage and cultivate the development of younger students in our department.
The students in our department can be regarded as the most dynamic group of young individuals on the Chung Yuan campus. They often assume leadership positions in various school clubs, which helps develop skills such as planning, leadership, organization, coordination, and teamwork. The alumni association has a long-standing tradition and organizes numerous events each year. They also lead the entire department in demonstrating a spirit of unity and fierce competition in the university sports events. As a result, our department consistently brings home a variety of trophies, both big and small, every year.
In our department, students’ employment opportunities primarily lie in the manufacturing and high-tech industries. However, the information technology sector also holds a significant proportion, and in recent years, many alumni have made a mark in the service industry as well. According to the estimates by the Council for Economic Planning and Development, the future demand for industrial engineering talents in our country is expected to continue surpassing the supply. With a large number of alumni from our department who have not only established a strong presence in the industry but also have a reputation for diligence and integrity, our graduates have become highly sought-after assets in the job market.
Department History:
Our department was established in the autumn of 1964 and participated in the joint entrance examination that year, enrolling the first batch of students. We were the second school in the country to establish an industrial engineering department. In the spring of 1965, Mr. Tan Da-Nian was appointed as the department chair. Later that year, a night division was added, and the department operated both day and night classes. Until now, the night division has produced over 7,000 graduates, accounting for a significant proportion of industrial engineering graduates in the country. Many of them have continued their studies and achieved doctoral and master’s degrees. Numerous alumni have achieved outstanding accomplishments in academia, both domestically and internationally. The department’s alumni who serve in the domestic industrial sector have also shown exceptional performance and received acclaim.
In August 1980, the university was restructured, and the then Minister of Education, Mr. Zhu Hui-Sen, emphasized the need to “strengthen the development of distinctive medical engineering and industrial engineering departments to meet the demand for specialized talents in enterprises.” This provided significant spiritual support to our department and became our driving force.
In July 1975, Mr. Tan resigned as the department chair, and Mr. Wang Huang-San took over until July 1978. Due to Mr. Wang’s overseas studies, Dr. Lu Yuan-Yuan, a member of the second cohort of alumni, was appointed as the department chair. In April 1985, Dr. Lu moved to the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand as a visiting professor. Dr. Tsao Guo-Xiong then served as the department chair until July 1990. From August 1990, Dr. Gu Dong-Yuan took over as the department chair. In the same year, the Industrial Engineering Institute was approved by the Ministry of Education and Dr. Gu served as the first director. In August 2001, Dr. Gu transferred to the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. Dr. Yang Jin-Zhou was then appointed as the department chair and institute director until July 2007. In response to the requirement for departmental integration, Dr. Gong Da-Chuan took over as the department chair from August 2007 and established the doctoral program and continuing education bachelor’s program. In September 2000, the Master’s In-Service Program was established.
Dr. Gong Da-Chuan served as the department chair until July 2011, and from August 2011, Dr. Jiang Rui-Qing assumed the position. Dr. Lin Jiu-Xiang took over as the department chair from August 2013. Dr. Zhang Guo-Hua became the department chair from August 2016. Dr. Rao Xin assumed the position from August 2020. Dr. Su Ling-Hui became the department chair from August 2021. Dr. Guo Cai-Ji assumed the position from August 2023. Dr. Zhao Jin-Rong became the department chair from August 2025. Dr. Qiu Yu-Fang assumed the position from August 2027. Dr. Zhou Yong-Can has been the department chair since August 2029.
Our department has six full professors, six associate professors, four assistant professors, one lecturer, and two teaching assistants. We also have over 20 adjunct faculty members, including one visiting professor. The department’s faculty members are strong and capable. Each year, we admit three undergraduate classes with 60 students per class, 45 students in the master’s program, 30 students in the in-service master’s program, and nine students in the doctoral program. The total number of students in the department exceeds 1,000.
